The plastic dome-shaped helmet is placed over the communication carrier, which houses two microphones and two earphones wired in a backup mode. Lovell and astronauts Frank Borman, mission commander, and William Anders, Lunar Module pilot, were to be launched by an Apollo/Saturn V space vehicle on a planned lunar orbital mission.
