Liftoff of Apollo 9 spacecraft
A 363-foot-high Apollo/Saturn V space vehicle carrying Apollo 9 astronauts James A. McDivitt, commander; David R. Scott, Command Module pilot, lifted off at 11:00 a.m., EST, March 3, 1969, from the Kennedy Space Center's Launch Complex 39A. They were launched on a planned 10-day Earth orbital mission to test the Lunar Module spacecraft for use on future manned lunar voyages. To the left of the rocket is the mobile launcher, a 445-foot-high steel structure on which the space vehicle is assembled and moved to the Launch Pad. It provides access platforms and support for propellant, electrical, and communications lines to the space vehicle. Apollo 9 is NASA's second manned space mission using a Saturn V space vehicle.
